Digital Smile Design

What Is Digital Smile Design?

Digital smile design is a unique dental treatment planning tool that strengthens a dentist’s diagnostic vision, enhances results predictability, along with improved communication between dental providers and their patients. Utilizing, photographs, videos, and temporary mock-ups, DSD enables the dental professional to get a better sense of the relationship between the lips, gums, and teeth, as well as how they work altogether to create the patient’s smile. The DSD experience gives you a positive outcome and allows providers to work with an artistic vision to create beautiful smiles.

How to start the Digital Smile Design Process?

If you decide to opt for DSD, the first step in the process is finding a provider near you. Your provider will go through the benefits of this treatment option. If you choose to move forward with it, your dentist will take digital scans of your mouth. It is quite time-efficient since you won’t have to come back for any additional imaging after the consultation is done.

The Process of Digital Smile Design

The data is imported into the software. The DSD digital library has a variety of forms and shapes that your dentist can browse through. It can be placed over the top of your teeth in the images. This gives you an idea of what you can expect from the treatment, as well as gives the dentist what’s needed to create a physical model with a dental lab. This data helps the lab create a more realistic model, taking into consideration your facial aesthetics and other important aspects.

You will be quite involved in the entire process from start to finish. You’ll have the opportunity to communicate your wants and needs to your dental smile designer and approve the three-dimensional model and mock-up images of what your smile will look like after the treatment is complete.

Once treatment planning is complete and you give the final approval, the restoration process begins. This often involves keeping the mock-up in your mouth as a preparation guide. Any damaged teeth will be removed, and restored teeth will be placed as implants or veneers. Your dentist will restore each tooth before moving on to the next.

How Is Digital Smile Design Different?

Digital Smile Design is a complete solution when it comes to predictability in treatment planning.DSD can produce a treatment plan that is unique to your dental needs and will give you the smile you deserve. It shows you exactly what your smile will look like at the end of the procedure, removing the struggle with miscommunication or unanswered questions due to a lack of clarity.

The DSD process involves

  • Digital X-rays from different angles, digital scan of the upper and lower teeth
  • HD video footage and photography of the resting-to-smiling face

The ‘before’ images allow the patient to compare the virtualized ‘after’ results of the DSD process to current appearances (including when resting or smiling).

Any preferences over tooth shape, positioning, and colour can be done with the comparison between the before and after imagery, highlighting any desired alterations to the treatment.

How long does the DSD process take?

All relevant digital scans, photography, video, and X-rays usually take around 30 – 40 minutes. The data is transferred to the Smile analysis software that is used to create accurate visualizations of the completed DSD process. The patient is called for a consultation when the results are returned to the dentist. This way, the patient is able to preview the results that may be possible following the different DSD procedures that their dentist has outlined as being the most suitable. When the patient is pleased with a particular result returned by the Digital Smile Design technician team and gives the go-ahead, final restorations are made. The overall completion time for a patient’s individual Digital Smile Design treatment plan varies depending on the number of treatments and the extent of the treatment required.
